You must hold a Provisional Driving Licence and be 17 years of age to legally drive a car on a public road. You must also be accompanied by a qualified driver over the age of 21 who has held a full licence in the relevant category for 3 years and whose licence is still valid. You can apply for a Provisional Licence up to 3 months before your 17th Birthday but the licence is not valid until your 17th Birthday. You can apply online for a Provisional Licence or by post using Form D1. You can obtain Form D1 from The Post Office or from the DVLA online form ordering service. You will need to provide identification and a photo of yourself when applying for your licence. If you want to apply by using Form D1 but do not want to send your documents through the post, ''The Post Office'' offer a Premium Checking Service.
